FrankenNAS

Project FrankenNAS (All posts)
Problem
I have something like 11 hard drives lying around, of various brands, content and sizes.  Some are in my current server (Running XP) sharing files to my network.  This PC sits next to my plasma TV and streams files to the network and the PS3.  It also runs Ventrilo, uTorrent, runs iTunes (remotely from iPhone) for music and burns CD's/DVD's for me.

Unfortunatly, said server:
  • Drops of the network for no reason every 24 hours
  • Torrent program locks up my router every 1 hours
  • Skips during streaming of files
  • With 6 different volumes of HDD space, I have files completly disorganized and all over the place
  • Its chock-a-block full (about 2.5TB total)
  • Ps3 Media server doesnt play some files randomly for no apparent reason (i.e. a file that plays one day is 'corrupted' the next, then OK again the following day.
Solution
Home-brew NAS server running old PC hardware (as I have around 5 clunker PC's in bits around the house, another 1-2 retired servers coming from work,
  • PC Running FreeNAS (FreeBSD install, complete with Web-ui, software RAID support, Torrents, etc
  • PC Specs - 2.2ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, 80GB 'OS' drive, 4 x 2TB WD SATA HDD's, 1 x 1TB WD SATA HDD.
  • Transmisison torrent client pre-installed, with remote Webui (iPhone compatiable), patched-in RSS feed scraper, and (my own) patch to email upon addition of a Torrent from a RSS feed
  • Software RAID-5 volume (4 x 2TBs giving me 4.8TB of usable space) with the redundancy to have one HDD fail and cause no issues.
  • Runs headless
